Nathan Cagna

EMT, Huron Valley Ambulance

Nathan Cagna has been an EMT with Huron Valley Ambulance since 2024. Though he is still new to HVA and the field of EMS, he has already made an incredible impact on our organization and his peers. Nathan is always professional, friendly, and in a great mood, and he demonstrates a passion for emergency medical services.

Nathan began a career in EMS after leaving a career in the British Armed Forces when he moved to the US to be near his wife’s family. Nathan had served 12 years in the military working on a specialized team. He did not have a medical background, but was drawn to the teamwork aspect of EMS and the opportunity to help others. He joined HVA through our EMT Work-Training program in 2023, immersing himself in the full-time program and becoming acquainted with EMS while excelling in his training. After earning his EMT license, he quickly learned the ropes and has become an exceptional healthcare provider. Nathan’s quick progression as an EMT and his patient, personable demeanor make him a natural mentor, and in the fall of 2024, Nathan’s dedication paid off with a promotion to Field Training Officer. Nathan is always willing to help his coworkers and is often seen with new employees studying policies and protocols in great detail, preparing them to complete their new employee training. Nathan is passionate about being a continued learner and furthering his skills development, and plans to start paramedic training this year.

Through his dedication, professionalism, and willingness to go above and beyond, Nathan has earned the respect of his coworkers, supervisors, and healthcare partners and has made a name for himself at HVA. Nathan shared that he really enjoys working with the training program because he sees the direct impact it has on his coworkers and how it makes our operations stronger. One aspect of being a Field Training Officer Nathan particularly enjoys is the opportunity to work with University of Michigan Physician EMS Fellows, many of whom are former HVA employees. Nathan says it’s educational to get the perspective of pre-hospital care from providers who have worked in the field and the hospital, and this helps shape how he trains new employees.

In his personal time, Nathan enjoys spending time with his wife, hiking with his dog, and participating in pistol shooting competitions. Nathan and his wife are expecting a baby girl and are excited to be new parents.

Nathan, we are proud to name Star of Life, thank you for being part of the HVA team. You have made such a large impact during your short time with us, and we know that you will do great things in your EMS career. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!
